Jon Johnson Takes First URSS Feature Win of 2008 at Whiskey Lake

The racing action resumed at Whiskey Lake Raceway as seventeen teams checked to do battle on the tight oval. Racers from both the North and East Regions made the trip and the fans weren’t disappointed as they put on quite a show. When the checkers dropped, The “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson picked up his first URSS Feature win in 2008.

Kansas City’s Corey Lutters led the field to the green and quickly jumped to the lead but the yellow would fly for Paul Flynn who rolled to a stop in turn two. On the restart Lutters once again took the point with Reed Bernbeck, Ken Lutters, Josh Fairbank and Darren Berry rounding out the top five. Ken Lutters made quick work of Bernbeck and ser his sights on the leader.  Back in the pack, Cody Salem and Jon Johnson were trading the sixth and seventh positions as they kept their eyes on the leaders.

Salem moved into the fifth spot on lap five with Johnson and Darren Berry hot on his heels. Lap six saw Beery spin in turn one to bring out he caution, on the restart Johnson turned up the heat on Salem once again. Corey Lutters continued to pace the field as the battle for second and third heated up between Ken Lutters and Bernbeck and on lap eleven Bernbeck made contact with Lutters that sent both tumbling to bring out the Red Flag.

On the restart, Corey Lutters once again took the lead with Josh Fairbank, Johnson, Salem and Smokey Fairbank rounding out the top five. Johnson took the second spot from Firbank on lap twelve, Salem followed suit and took the third spot from Fairbank on lap fourteen. Lap fifteen saw Johnson take to the high side to grab the point from Lutters.

As the laps wore down the battle for the fourth spot heated up as Smokey Fairbank turned up the heat on cousin Josh Fairbank as the pair battled for the final six laps for the position. As the checkers fell it was Johnson taking the win with Corey Lutters, Cody Salem rounding out the top three. The battle for the fourth spot proved to be a drag race to the stripe with Josh Fairbank and Smokey Fairbank side by side with Josh edging out Smokey by inches. 

The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went the Jon Johnson who came from his ninth starting spot to take the victory.

Heat Race winners were Jon Johnson, Corey Lutters and Ken Lutters.
