Herbert Takes URSS Win Number Five at Dodge City Raceway
Park
Mother Nature had been baking
Southwestern Kansas all weekend with temperatures over the
century mark and Saturday was no different. Twenty-Two
drivers checked in at the gate to do battle at DCRP and the
racing action was hot and heavy and the fans on hand were
not disappointed. When the checkers flew in was Dodge City’s
Brian Herbert picking up his fifth URSS Feature win of the
2008 Season.
Ulysses Kansas’s Jerry Caldwell brought
the field to the green with Fowler Kansas’s Ritchie Dewell
jumping out to the early lead with Caldwell, John Colbert,
Kevin Smith and Darren Bowman rounding out the top five.
Dewell held the lead but the battle for second heated up
between Caldwell and Kevin Smith who was pressuring him for
the spot. Tyler Knight worked his up to the fourth spot by
lap four relegating Colbert to fifth.
Darren Bowman and Taylor Velasquez took
the fifth and sixth spots on lap five with Brian Herbert
applying the heat to Colbert for the sixth position. Lap six
saw the caution wave as Brandon Fisher came to a stop in
turn two after making contact with the wall. On the restart
Dewell once again stretched his legs out as he rocketed off
into the lead. Caldwell and Smith returned to their battle
for the runner up spot with Smith making the pass for the
spot on lap nine bringing Velasquez with him into the third
position. Lap ten saw Velasquez take over the second spot as
Smith slipped to third.
Brian Herbert continued his run through
the field as he took the third spot on lap twelve. As the
trio started to come upon lapped traffic, the battle for the
lead heated up once again. Dewell, Velasquez and Herbert
dice their way in and out of traffic for the next five laps
as they jockeyed for the position only to have Dewell retain
the lead at the stripe. Lap eighteen saw Dewell and
Velasquez come up on a lapped car and Herbert dove around
the pair to take the lead on lap eighteen. Velasquez took
the second spot from Dewell on lap nineteen and set his
sights on Herbert. Velasquez used a lapped car to grab the
lead on lap twenty-one.
Back in the pack, Keefe Hemel had been
working his way through the field from his thirteen starting
spot to grab the sixth position on lap twenty-one. Hemel and
fifth place Tyler Knight had their sights set on Dewell as
they worked their way through traffic. Herbert used a t
lapped car once again to take the lead from Velasquez on lap
twenty-three as Knight turned up the wick on Dewell. Knight
grabbed the third spot from Dewell on lap twenty-four as the
leaders took the white flag. When the checkers flew it was
Herbert picking up his fifth URSS Feature win with
Velasquez, Knight, Dewell and Hemel rounding out the top
five.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger
Award” went to Taylor Milton who came from his twentieth
starting spot to finish in the seventh position. It wasn’t
without a Herculian effort by members of several crews to
get Taylor’s car back together after a Heat # 2 tumble.
Parts came from all over the pits to rebuild his mount.
Heat Race Winners were Darren Bowman,
Ty Williams and Brian Herbert.
