Herbert Scores Second URSS Win At Hugoton
The United Rebel Sprint Series made its debut at the "Dirtona Raceway" in Hugoton Kansas Saturday night before a packed house, and when the checkered flag flew, Brian Herbert had scored his second win of the year with the URSS Rebels.
Leading the field to the green was Hill City's Larry Radcliffe along with outside pole sitter Ken Lutters of Ransom. Seventh starter Smokey Fairbank used the low line to shoot into the lead at the end of lap one followed by Radcliffe, Justin Schwien,
Brandon Fisher and Lutters. A spin by Kasey Beckham on lap three bunched up the field, on the restart, Schwien took the lead away from Fairbank but clipped the cone as the green flew.
Lap ten saw Ensign's Brandon Fisher take the lead followed by eighth starting Brian Herbert who had methodically worked his way to the runner spot with tenth starter Jon Johnson in tow, with Schwien and ninth place starter Ray Seemann rounding out the top
five. Those five cars waged a back and forth battle for ten laps until Herbert took the lead for good on lap twenty.
The top five never changed for the last five laps as the quintet worked their way through traffic. In the closing laps current URSS Points Leader Smokey Fairbank came up to challenge Seemann and Schwien for the fifth position. As the checkers flew, it was
Herbert taking the win with Fischer, Johnson, Seemann and Schwien rounding out the top five.
Heat Race winners were Fairbank, Johnson and Schwien.
The Weld Racing wheels "Hard Charger Award" went to Brian Herbert
who came from his eighth place starting position to claim the win.
