Jeff Radcliffe Wires URSS Field At Wakeeney Speedway
The United Rebel Sprint Series rolled in the Wakeeney Speedway Sunday night for night number one of the annual Memorial Day weekend show. Despite the efforts of Mother Nature to dampen the hopes of area dirt track fans, Track Promoter Terry Cunningham and his staff went beyond the call to make sure fans got to see the show. The rains during the week provided a lightning fast racing surface and the 26 teams that made the trek wasted no time in giving the fans in the stands a great show.
The A Feature line up was once again determined by the “Revenge Draw” format since many of the drivers attending didn’t have a point average. The top ten drivers in passing points were brought to the front stretch where they had to draw a pill, the catch being they could not keep it for themselves they had to give it to another driver. Jeff Radcliffe was the last driver without a starting spot and the last pill left to be drawn was the pole. The Hill City driver made the most of that gift as he and Craig Jecha led the field to the green. Radcliffe wasted no time jumping to the lead followed by Cody Lampe, Conner Atkinson, Jecha and Zach Blurton rounded out the top five after lap one. A quick caution flew on lap two as Austin Mclean got up into the loose stuff and spun in turn four.
On the restart Radcliffe once jumped out to the lead but Atkinson was closing in on runner up Lampe and on lap four took the spot away. Blurton soon caught Lampe on took away the third spot on lp five. Further back in the field a pair of drivers were winding their way through the pack. CJ Johnson who started 10th and Steven Richardson who started 12th had made it all the way to the 4th and 5th positions respectively by lap seven. B Main winner Luke Cranston was steadily climbing through the pack as well and by lap eleven had made it to the 7th spot.
At the half way point it was still Radcliffe, Atkinson, Blurton, Johnson and Richardson in the top five spots. As the leaders started to encounter lapped traffic Ray Seemann went up in a ball of smoke on the front stretch on lap seventeen to bring the second caution of the race. On the restart the field bunched up with Blurton hot on the bumper of Atkinson. Lap eighteen saw Blurton, Johnson, Richardson all relegate Atkinson back to the 5th spot with Cranston in hot pursuit. Cranston would take over the 5th spot a lap later, Atkinson soon would have John Webster and Zac Taylor on her nerf as the laps started winding. Atkinson held the spot as Webster and Taylor were in hot pursuit.
As the checkers fell it was Radcliffe picking up the win with Blurton, Johnson, Richardson and Cranston rounding out the top five. The Keiser Aluminum Hard Charger Award went to Steven Richardson who moved up spots from his 12th starting position to finish 4th.
Heat Race Winners were Craig Jecha, Zach Blurton and John Webster.
