Steven Richardson Victorious at URSS Bullring Nationals
The United Rebel Sprint Series invaded the ¼ mile oval at the Rush County Fairgrounds for the seventh stop on the 2016 Myers Racing Engines National Points Championship. Richardson wired the field from the pole position to pick up his second win of the 2016 URSS Season in the thirty lap feature.
Steven Richardson lead the field to the green and jumped out to the point with outside pole-sitter Koby Walters, Jake Bubak, Darren Berry and Brian Herbert rounding out the top five at the end of lap one. Luke Cranston and JD Johnson both were on Herbert’s tail tank and slipped by Herbert to take over fifth and sixth. Cranston soon made quick work of Darren Berry taking the fourth spot on five. The caution waved on lap six as Craig Jecha looped his mount in turn three to slow the field.
On the restart, Richardson once again jumped out to the lead with Koby Walters in hot pursuit. Lap nine saw Cranston close up on the bumper of Bubak with Cranston taking away the third spot. Behind the leaders Jeremy Huish had starting making his way to the front coming from his 15th starting spot to claim the tenth spot by ten.
Lap eleven saw the caution wave once again as Reed Bernbeck and JD Johnson came to a stop on the front stretch. Bernbeck’s night was finished but thanks to the Cranston crew, Johnson was able to get his right rear changed and rejoined the field.
On the restart Richardson once again jumped out to the lead with Koby Walters and Cranston hot on his heels. Lap sixteen saw the leaders approaching lapped traffic once again as Bubak used it to his advantage to take back the third spot. Traffic set up an epic battle for positions two through four as Koby Walters, Luke Cranston and Jake Bubak would battle and swap out spots for the next five laps.
Richardson wove his way through the lapped traffic losing little ground as the battle heated up behind him. Cranston, Walters and Bubak battled lap after lap each taking turns at the runner up spot only to give it back the next lap. As the laps were winding down Richardson kept the lead as the battle continued for positions two to four. With three to go Walters held the runner up spot with Cranston hot on his tail. The pair split the lapped car of Johnson with Cranston slightly holding the spot at the flag stand as the white flag fell.
At the checkers it was Liberal Kansas driver Steven Richardson taking the win with Cranston, Bubak, Koby Walters and Darren Berry rounding out the top five. It was Richardson’s second win of the 2016 season.
Jeremy Huish picked up the Kaiser Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” finishing sixth from his 15th staring spot.
Heat Race winners were Darren Berry, Steven Richardson and Zach Blurton.
