C J Johnson Sweeps URSS Weekend at the Motorplex
The United Rebel Sprint Series continued its Memorial Weekend with night number two at the Steve King Memorial at the Jetmore Motorplex. The packed grandstands witnessed one of the best races in URSS history as the Rebels ran two and three wide at the high-banks, at one point positions one through six were within mere feet of each other as they battled for the lead. When it was all said and done, it was Quinter Kansas’s C. J. Johnson swept the weekends races at the Motorplex, but getting the win wasn’t easy.
Sublette Kansas’s Lance Davis led the field to the green flag and jumped out into the early lead, as the field made its way through turns one and two. Jetmore Kansas’s Ray Seemann took over the lead going into turn three on lap two, with Taylor Milton, Davis, Tanner Mullens, Barry Crane and Darren Bowman battling for positions fourth through sixth. Lap four saw the battle for the fifth position heat up as C J Johnson made his way to challenge Bowman for he spot. Up front Seemann was being pressured by Fargo Oklahoma’s Taylor Milton for the top spot as Milton continued to pressure the leader looking for the opening to make the pass.
After a quick caution Seemann continued to hold the lead as behind him a battle royal was shaping up as Brian Herbert and Jason Martin had made their way to the front. Herbert took the runner-up spot from Milton as Johnson and Patrick Bourke made their way to Davis’s back bumper and the pair quickly made their way past Davis to take over the position. Up front Herbert used the low line to press Seemann for the top spot and on lap thirteen he made the pass. Seemann used the cushion to take the spot back one lap later as Milton joined the fray for the runner up spot battling Herbert. Back in the pack, CJ Johnson, Tanner Mullens and Jason Martin all had worked their way through traffic to battle for the fourth through sixth positions.
Soon it was Milton, Herbert, Johnson, Mullens and Martin all fighting for position racing two and three wide as they diced their way through lapped traffic. Johnson made his move and split Milton and Herbert going into turn three to take over the runner-up position and set his sights on Seemann. Johnson dove to the bottom and used the low line to take the lead from the rim riding Seemann. Jason Martin had worked his way o the fifth spot as the laps started winding down. Soon it was Seemann, Milton, Herbert, Martin and Bowman all battling for position at times running mere inches from each other as they sliced and diced their way around the 3/8’s mile oval.
With two to go the best battle on the tracks was for positions two through six, with Seemann and Martin locked in a fierce battle for the runner up spot followed closely by Herbert, Mullens and Milton hot on their heels fighting for position as well. As the white flag fell the battle for second through sixth place was intense as all five cars were in a pack jockeying for position. Going down the backstretch Martin and Seemann dueled their way into the final corner side by side with Seemann, Milton and Herbert in their tire tracks. When the checkers flew it was Johnson picking up the win with Martin, Seemann, Mullens, and Milton rounding out the top five. However Mullens failed to make the minimum weight at the scales and was disqualified.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to C J Johnson came from his ninth starting spot to grab the victory.
