C J Johnson Picks Up URSS Feature Win At RPM Speedway
It what could be called a tune-up for the upcoming “Wheatshocker Rebel Nationals,” thirty-two teams pulled through the gate Friday night at RPM Speedway to test the waters on the 3/8’s oval. After a first lap hiccup, fans where treated to 24 laps of green flag action, and when the checkers flew it was Quinter’s C.J. Johnson picking up his first URSS Feature win of the 2008 Season.
Johnson led the field to the green and quickly took the lead but the caution flag flew as Southern Region points leader Brian Herbert made contact with another car and found himself on his side in turn three. Also collected in the melee was Corey Lutters, both were done for the night. On the restart, Johnson reassumed the lead with Taylor Velasquez, Darrren Bowman, Taylor Milton and Jon Johnson in tow. The “Kansas Tornado” quickly grabbed the third spot from Bowman and started to pressure Velasquez for he runner up spot.
Abilene’s Paul Flynn worked his way to the fourth position on lap four and brought Milton with him. Flynn pressured Johnson for several laps until taking the third spot on lap nine. Mike Woodruff quietly worked his way to the sixth spot with Ray Seemann in tow in seventh. Lap sixteen saw the battle for the third spot heat up as Jon Johnson and Paul Flynn worked their way through traffic with Johnson taking the spot from Flynn. Johnson turned up he heat on second place Velasquez and on lap nineteen he took the position.
Flynn took the third spot from Velasquez on lap twenty-one and Woodruff and Seemann joined the fight for the fourth position. Woodruff took the position on lap twenty-four and quickly pressured Flynn for the third spot. As the white flag flew, Woodruff took the third spot from Flynn and Seemann took the fifth spot from Velasquez. As the Checkers flew it was a top two sweep as C. J. Johnson claimed the win with his Father Jon Johnson in the runner up spot, with Woodruff, Flynn and Seemann rounding out the top five.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to Cody Salem who came from his sixteenth starting position to finish tenth.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels B-Main winner was Justin Schwien.
Heat race winners were Jon Johnson, Taylor Milton, Ray Seemann and Taylor Velasquez.
