Tanner Mullens Tames Hutchinson Raceway Park In URSS Action
After a week off from a heavy dose of Memorial Day racing action the United Rebel Sprint Series was back to full throttle for two full nights of action in the sunflower state. The Rebels opened a two day swing at Hutchinson Raceway Park and it would be Tanner Mullens jumping out to the early advantage and wiring the field for the twenty five lap feature. Mullens, yet another new face in victory lane in 2010, notched his first rebel win of the season and his fourth career URSS win.
Sublette’s Jordan Randels led the fourteen-car field to the green flag at Hutchinson Raceway Park for twenty-five laps of tire spinning racing action. As the field gathered up speed and maneuvered turns one and two the caution flag would fly immediately for a Josh Fairbank spin. To dodge the Goddard shoe, the field would part like the red sea and all would be able to squeeze by except Dodge City’s Nick King. Both drivers would be unable to continue.
The field would be re-racked with Randels once again on the point. On the restart, Mullens would surge to the front from his inside row two starting slot. Randels, Cody Salem, Ty Williams, Brian Herbert, and Keefe Hemel would sidle in behind the leader.
On the seventh circuit, with Mullens locked on the bottom in clean air, Cody Salem would begin to dog Randels for the runner up slot. Salem would make the pass stick on lap eight and would then set his sights on Mullens. Randels would drop to third with Williams fourth and Herbert the top five.
Caution would fly on the fifteenth lap for Darren Bowmen during a battle for sixth. After showing Hemel the nose in turn one, “The Bo-man” would loop around in his quest for repeat victory at HRP.
Mullens would lead the field back to green flag racing with ten laps remaining with Salem, Williams, Herbert and Randels the top five. On the restart a back and forth battle would ensue between Salem and Williams for second. The duo would duke it out for the runner up slot going side by side time and time again. Herbert would get into the action and the trio would carve up the 3/8 oval. Meanwhile Ray Seemann would blast around Randels and move into the top five.
With two laps remaining, Williams would put Salem and Herbert in his rearview mirror for good but just as the Liberal driver set his sights on Mullens, the checkered flag would wave and time would run out. Mullens, who would not be denied would grab the win with Williams settling for second, Salem would cross the stripe in third, and Ray Seemann would use a last lap pass to lock down the fourth position after starting ninth. Herbert would check the top five.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to Ty Williams who came from his eighth place starting spot to grab the second position.
