Brian Herbert Claims URSS Win At The Steve King Memorial

The United Rebel Sprint Series finished its two day run at the Great American Dirt track at the Jetmore Motorplex Sunday night as thirty-two teams took to the high banks to battle it out for the Championship Night win at the Steve King Memorial race. Mother Nature provided some welcome relief from the hot and windy conditions on Saturday night as fans and the racers enjoyed the cooler temps. The fans in attendance were treated to an old fashioned shootout as the Rebels shot around the 3/8’s mile oval with Tanner Mullens and Brian Herbert locked in a classic battle racing side by side the last handful full of laps.

Andale Kansas’s Tanner Mullens led the field to the green flag and jumped out to the lead with Kris Moore, Lance Davis, Zach Blurton and Reed Bernbeck rounding out the top five. As the field completed lap one, Jordan Randels got out of shape on the front stretch and Cole Wood came to a halt to bring out the caution. On the restart Mullins jumped out to the lead once again with Kris Moore hot on his tail.  Brian Herbert, Jason Martin and Smokey Fairbank all charged their way up to catch the top five on the restart.

Mullens continued to hold the point with Lance Davis grabbing the runner up spot from Moore on lap two. Zach Blurton soon made his way to the challenge for the third spot. Herbert and Martin made their way to the fifth and sixth spot by lap four and were soon pressuring Moore. Davis continued to hold the runner up spot with Moore and Blurton battling for the third spot. Caution waved once again for a spin in turn two.

Mullens once again took the point as Martin took over the third spot on lap six with Herbert following him to the fourth position.   Lap seven saw Davis take the lead in turns three and four with Mullens right in his heels. Mullens retook the lead as the pair exited turn two and raced down the backstretch. Mullens took the point back with Davis, Martin and Herbert all battling for the runner up spot.

Herbert took the third spot from Martin on lap ten, but Martin hung close and the pair tried to run down Davis. Lap eleven saw Corey Lutters and Keefe Hemel spin to bring out the caution and bunch up the field. On the restart, Mullens once again jumped out to the lead with Davis, Herbert, Martin and Ty Williams in tow. Herbert turned up the pressure on Davis and on lap fifteen took the runner up spot and set his sights on Mullens. Williams made his way past martin on lap sixteen.

Mullens and Herbert started to encounter lapped traffic and as the pair sliced and diced their way through the field Herbert took the lead on lap nineteen. Mullens hung tough on Herbert’s tail with Davis, Williams and Martin all locked in a battle for the third spot. Mullens took the point back on lap twenty-one with Herbert still on his tail tank. Williams and Martin were stalking third place Davis with Martin making the pass on lap twenty-two.

The last two laps Mullens and Herbert were side by side as they split traffic. With one lap to go Mullens still held the point but Herbert made one last try to take the point and as the pair drag raced down the backstretch. Herbert made the pass and hung on for the victory with Mullens, Martin, Williams and Davis rounding out the top five.

The Keizer Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” was won by Brian Herbert who cane from his eighth starting spot to race his way to the front to pick up the win.

Heat Race Winners were Zach Blurton, Tanner Mullins, Lance Davis, Jason Martin and Brian Herbert.
