Martin wins 7th URSS feature of season
DODGE CITY — Jason Martin realized he had more work to do.
And the Liberal sprint car driver did just that Friday night during the United Rebel Sprint Series feature at Dodge City Raceway Park.
Martin moved his way from his ninth-place starting spot into second, then realized he had one more driver to pass before taking the point and winning his seventh URSS feature of the season.
Jeff Radcliffe led a large portion of Friday night's race as the field behind him shuffled through positions. Martin, meanwhile, went from ninth to fourth after the first lap, then eventually got by Luke Cranston for second.
“By that time, I thought Cranston was leading,” Martin said. “Then I saw an orange car up there, and Radcliffe was going good. When I got into second, the track started taking rubber. Then I realized I had to get up there.”
Radcliffe started strong and ran one of his best races of the season while trying to keep Martin on his tail.
“There was a car up there going just as good as I was,” Martin said.
The two JE Chassis cars battled, with Martin eventually getting by Radcliffe for the lead in the caution-free feature.
Cranston later would get by Radcliffe for third, while Martin won his 16th career URSS race — tying Brian Herbert for third all-time in series history.
Ty Williams finished fourth behind Radcliffe, with Herbert rounding out the top five.
Tyler Knight and Barry Crane won the two B-features.
Heat race winners were Martin, Cranston, Josh Fairbank, Ty Williams and Richie Dewell.
The Keizer Aluminum Racing Wheels Hard Charger Award went to Martin, who started ninth and finished first.
