Smokey Fairbank Captures His First URSS Win

May 7th, 2007 -  Night two of the 2007 URSS Racing Season held at the Dawson County Speedway in Lexington, Nebraska was a barn burner on an exceptionally fast and tacky track which saw numerous battles for position and a dominating drive by Smokey Fairbank to pick up his first URSS A-Main win.

North Platte, Nebraska driver Tommy Williams led the field to the green flag and held the position until a pass coming of of turn four on lap two by Smokey Fairbank that gave the lead to the Ransom, KS driver that he would never relinquish.  Lap four for saw Mike Spear from Lincoln, Ks and St. Joseph, Missouri’s Cody Salem move up to the 3rd and 4th spots respectively and battled each other for several laps while Russell, Kansas’s Justin Schwien moved from his 9th place starting position to 5th by lap seven and passed Salem for the 4th on lap nine while tenth starting Larry Radcliffe of Hill City, Ks. wove his way through traffic to capture the sixth spot by lap ten.

On lap 12 the first caution waived for the number 28 of Tom Belsky of North Platte, Nebraska as he slowed to a stop in turn one with mechanical problems. This tightened up the field and on the restart Fairbank again pulled away using the cushion on the highside while Salem moved into the third passing both Spear and Schwien on lap 13 until Schwien worked his way back up to take the third spot away from Salem on lap 16 and set his sights on second place Williams.

Williams and Schwien battled for the spot for several laps with Williams holding him off until they tangled coming off turn four sending Williams spinning on the front straightaway, bringing out the yellow for the final time, sending a disgruntled Williams to the rear of the field and setting up a green white checker finish. On the restart Mike Spear and Larry Radcliffe took the third and fourth position as Salem, who’s engine was fading, went to fifth with Topeka’s Greg Thyfault finishing  6th. Norton Kansas’s Randy Bantam and his brother Mark battled it out for the seventh spot with Randy taking the position at the checkers. Travis Decker from Wakeeney Ks came home in ninth while Tommy Williams charged from the tail of the field to round out the top ten. Fairbank never had a challenge as he took the checker s for his first URSS Feature win.
