Hagans Takes Win In The URSS/HDSS 305 Challenge

The stage was set for an old fashioned western shootout Saturday night as the United Rebel Sprint Series pulled into the Dodge City Raceway Park to do battle with the Harley-Davidson Sprint Series regulars. It was the third and final meeting between them, and 35 teams pulled through the gate, to see who would grab the $1,000 top prize, and when the checker flag flew, the fans were not disappointed.

Lacrosse’s Kirby Hagans led the field to the green with Kinsley’s Darren Bowman on the outside pole.  The “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson of Utica wasted no time taking the lead from his 3rd starting spot on the opening lap, followed by Hagans,  Brian Herbert and Kris Miller rounding out the top five. Lap 2 saw the red flag fly as John Colbert’s mount hit the wall near the pit entrance and flipped. Colbert was taken to a local Hospital, with a bad concussion and sore but the CAT Scan showed nothing else..

On the restart, Johnson led the field to the green with Hagans, Herbert, Paul Flynn and Bowman in tow. Bowman, Justin Schwien and Keefe Hemel battled for several laps for the 6th spot with each driver taking turns swapping the spot back and forth until Schwien took it for good on lap 10. Back in the pack, 17th starting Cody Salem started his charge towards the front and by lap 13, Salem had worked his way up to the 10th spot. By lap 18, Salem made his way to the 8th spot and set his sights on Bowman and Hemel.

Traffic made the battle for the lead heat up in the closing laps as Hagans and Johnson picked their way through. Johnson would close the gap several times, but Hagans never gave up the position as the checkers flew it was Hagan taking the victory, with Johnson a close 2nd followed by Schwien, Flynn and Herbert to round out the top five.

Heat race winners were Schwien, Johnson, Hagans and Flynn.

The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to Cody Salem who started 17th and raced his way to a 8th place finish.
