Jason “The Hitman” Martin Doubles Up in URSS Action At DCRP
By Mike Wilson
Dodge City, Kansas (August 30, 2008) – The Budweiser Shootout Finals jump started a two day run at Dodge City Raceway Park during the Labor Day weekend. The weekend saw fast and furious racing action and provided family fun for all.
The United Rebel Sprint Series rolled out a twenty five lap feature event with tire spinning, mud slinging racing excitement. Barry Crane “The Mullet Man” led the field to the green jumping out to the early lead. Cody Caldwell, Brandon Fisher, Tanner Mullens, and Kris Moore rounded out the top five in the early going. Lap five saw Jason Martin roll into the top five bringing Taylor Velasquez with him.
Caldwell and Fisher would be shuffled backwards when another young hot shoe, Tanner Mullens, cracked the top five. Crane would stretch his advantage to a straightaway but several cautions would tighten the field. “The Mullet Man” would yield the lead as Jason “The Hitman” Martin blew by with fifteen laps remaining. Tyler Knight would climb to second with Velasquez, Mullens, and Brian Herbert rounding out the top five. Just as Knight had the leader in sight disaster would strike as the young gunner tagged the turn two wall loosing a right rear tire pulling the caution flag and ending the Wright native’s run.
With five laps to go the stage was set for a good old-fashioned Wild West shootout. On the restart “The Hitman” would use the bottom of turns one and two with Velasquez pounding the cushion. Mullens and Ty Williams would battle for third and fourth with Crane dueling Herbert for fifth and sixth. As the checkers flew, Martin would drive to victory lane for the second time on the season. Velasquez, Williams, Mullens, and Crane would check the top five.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” was won by Brian May who raced his way from his eighteenth starting spot to finish in the eighth Position.
Heat race winners were Tanner Mullens, Taylor Velasquez and Jason Martin.
