Ty Williams Wheeling In URSS Win At Phillips County
Ty Williams made a triumphant return to United Rebel Sprint Series victory lane after topping Friday night’s main event at Phillips County Raceway at Holyoke, Colorado. Williams, the current national point leader for Rick Salem’s Rebels, was able to hold off past series champions “Flying” Brian Herbert and Smokey Fairbank to notch his fourth triumph of the season, the sixth of his Rebel career.
Fourteen year old Colorado native, Cole Wood, would bring 20 cars to the green flag at Phillips County Raceway. As the anxious crowd held their breath, the field barreled into turns one and two. Early cautions for Tara Jo Christie and Michael Williams would halt the grid. The lineup would be re-racked two by two and Smokey Fairbank would eventually find his way to the front from an outside row two starting position. Cole Wood would battle Zach Blurton for second with Reed Bernbeck, Brian Herbert, and Ty Williams in tow.
The yellow would halt the field momentarily on the second circuit as Cole Wood spun in turn two. A single file restart would see the action heat up with Williams using the outside lane to blast around Bernbeck for third. A heavy weight prize fight would ensue with the top five exchanging blows lap after lap.
Just as Williams pulled alongside of Fairbank for the lead, the caution would be thrown again. Reverting back to the last completed lap Fairbank would secure the show position with Williams, Blurton, Bernbeck, and Herbert the top five.
Back underway Williams would waste no time and pull alongside of Fairbank’s deuce to challenge for the top position. A drag race down the back chute would ensue and Williams would prevail at the stripe.
With Williams and Fairbank slicing and dicing through lapped traffic, the race for third, fourth, and fifth was so close you could throw a blanket over Blurton, Bernbeck, and Herbert. Back and forth they would go, flip flopping for position lap after lap. Herbert would roar to third and begin to pressure Fairbank for second. “Flyin’ Brian” would grab the runner up position with six circuits remaining.
The final caution of the night would be pulled with five laps remaining, for a spinning Ian Christie in turn two. The stage was set for an epic showdown in Holyoke. Williams would slowly idle the field around the 3/8 oval and as the green flag waved, the Liberal shoe would sprint out to the advantage with Herbert, Fairbank, Blurton, and Bernbeck in tow. The field would be content to ride it out and with the checkers waving Williams would check into victory lane for the fourth time in 2010. Herbert would settle for the runner up slot, with Fairbank riding in third. Blurton would cross the stripe in fourth with Bernbeck rounding out the top five.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to Darren Berry who came from his fourteenth starting position to grab sixth.
