Brian Herbert Grabs URSS Win at the Great American Dirt Track

The United Rebel Sprint Series made its first appearance of the 2010 Season at the newly renovated Great American Dirt Track at the Jetmore Motorplex and the fans were treated to an old fashioned shootout. Thirty URSS Sprinters made the trek to the lightening fast 3/8’s mile oval, the fans only needed the edge of their seat as the leaders sliced and diced their way through traffic. When it was all said and done, Dodge City Kansas’s Brian Herbert made the hard fought trip to victory lane.

Dodge City’s Keefe Hemel lead the field to the green flag and jumped out to the lead with Darren Bowman, Smokey Fairbank, Jeff Crook and Brian Herbert rounding out the top five at the end of lap one. Crook quickly took the third spot on lap two, lap three saw Herbert make the pass for the fourth spot shuffling Fairbank to the fifth spot.  Jetmore Kansas’s Ray Seemann made his way into the top five as he grabbed the fifth spot on lap five.

The races only caution waved on lap six as Michael Williams spun in turn two, leader Keefe Hemel clipped the stalled sprinter ending his night. On the restart, last weeks race winner Darren Bowman took the top spot with Crook, Herbert, Seemann and Smokey Fairbank rounding out the top five. The top five stayed glued together as they started to encounter lapped traffic on lap eleven. Herbert turned up the heat on second place Crook as the pair battled with Herbert taking the position for good on lap thirteen.

Jeff Crook and Ray Seemann were locked in a heated battle for the third spot with the pair looking for racing room as they wove their way through traffic.  Richie Dewell soon joined the pair as the Fowler Kansas driver had worked his way up to the fifth spot by lap fifteen. Up front Bowman and Herbert were still battling lapped traffic as Herbert started to close the gap each lap.

Back in the pack, Josh Fairbank had made his way into the top ten by lap seventeen after starting in the nineteenth position. Fairbank soon found himself in a heated battle for the seventh through ninth spots with Smokey Fairbank, Nick King and Lance Davis.  The foursome used different lines as they all jockeyed for the positions. Davis made his way to the seventh spot on lap twenty with Smokey Fairbank hot on his bumper.

Up front Herbert had closed the gap and was pressuring Bowman for the top spot. As the pair rocketed through turns three and four they split Kris Moore coming off of turn four as Herbert took the low line grabbed the lead for good on lap twenty-one. Lap twenty-two saw Seemann take the third spot from Crook as Dewell closed in each lap in the fifth position.

As the field took the white flag, Herbert continued to hold the point with Bowman looking to make up ground on the leader. When the checkers fell it was Brian Herbert taking his tenth career URSS Feature win with Bowman, Seemann, Crook and Dewell rounding out the top five.

The Keizer Aluminum Wheels “Hard Charger Award” was picked up by Josh Fairbank, who raced his way from his nineteenth starting spot to finish in the eighth position.
