Bubak claims first career URSS win
Calhan, Colo. — It turns out fatherly advice is important to listen to. Just ask Jake Bubak.
The Arvada, Colo., driver in the United Rebel Sprint Series had ran consistently at the top of the field all year long in his first full year in the series.
On Saturday night at El Paso County Speedway in Calhan, Colo., Bubak finally got his first career URSS victory.
“My dad kept telling me I was going to get one this year,” Bubak said. “I kept hoping it would happen. It was unexpected.”
Bubak started fifth in the feature and was near the front three laps in when the caution flag flew.
In fact, he was up to second, but the yellow flag flew before the lap was completed, relegating him back to third.
He finally made his way around the second-place car and set his sights on the leader.
“I got around the leader, then I saw there was five to go,” Bubak said. “I saw shadows at times and was getting worried a little.”
Bubak was able to hold off the charge, though, claiming his first win.
“We had family in that lives in Colorado Springs, and they never had seen a race before,” the teenager said. “It was fun having them in victory lane, getting pictures with us.”
Brian Hardman, who had won the last two races at the track, finished second, followed by Adam Trimble in third. Dennis Bellanti was fourth.
Trimble won the Keizer Aluminum Racing Wheels Hard-Charger Award, going from eighth to third.
