Hathaway lovin' dirt, 1st URSS win
CALHAN, Colo. — The final result was a surprise to Mike Hathaway.
The former asphalt driver now competing with the United Rebel Sprint Series picked up his first series victory Saturday night in a non-wing show at El Paso County Speedway in Calhan, Colo.
“It feels really good,” he said. “I'm shocked. I didn't expect to be that fast that quick. I'm coming from an asphalt late model background, and we changed gears this year and got into a sprint car.”
The move has worked out well and was capped off with Saturday's feature victory.
“I haven't had so much fun,” Hathaway said. “By far, it's the most fun in a car I've ever driven.”
Hathaway started strong and finished stronger. In only his fourth URSS show — and first non-wing show — he considered his lack of dirt-track experience key Saturday.
“I'm not real sure what the car was supposed to be doing,” Hathaway said. “Maybe the guys weren't used to driving the non-wing cars and were overshooting it. It was our first non-wing show, and we didn't know what to expect or what the car was supposed to feel like.”
Hathaway got to the lead before the halfway point, then pulled away for the comfortable win in his sprint car he found on Craigslist.
“I'm just real happy and real proud of the success we've had in short time,” Hathaway said.
Jake Bubak finished second, with Blake Smith in third. Clint Schubert and Zach Merritt rounded out the top five.
Heat race winners were Smith and Bubak.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard-Charger Award went to Schubert, who moved up seventh spots.
