Doubleheader set for Colorado Region drivers

OBERLIN — From Colorado to Kansas, then back again. That's what drivers in the Colorado Region will be facing this weekend as the United Rebel Sprint Series kicks into gear.

On Friday night, both Colorado and Kansas drivers will compete at Thomas County Speedway in Colby. On Saturday, the Colorado Region will continue at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colo.

John Gerloff won the first race in Fort Morgan earlier this summer, his first URSS career win. Drivers are expecting another exciting race in Colorado.

Blake Smith Jr., fresh off his first URSS win last week in Calhan, Colo., said one of the keys will be to avoid traffic when making a march to the front.

“It will just be keeping the car clean,” he said. “You have to finish with a clean car every night. That's my goal every night. You try to get in the top five and have a clean car.”

Veteran sprint car driver Patrick Bourke echoed that thought.  "You have to be able to adapt,” he said. “With the format and the way we start with the high-point guys on the fifth row, you've got to be able to go where others aren't. You can't run over them. You have to go around them and be able to adapt. You have to know where their lines are before the race starts. Sometimes, you have to go even where it's not the fastest to get around them.”

Bourke leads the Colorado region with 710 points in six races. He's followed closely by Adam Trimble with 684 points, and Smith with 680. Bob Sheaffer (656) and Blake Bogenhagen (606) round out the top five in the region entering the weekend.

Trimble finished second at Fort Morgan earlier this year, while Smith was fourth and Bourke was sixth.
