Tripleheader weekend scheduled for URSS

OBERLIN — There might not be fireworks in the sky this weekend, but there's sure to be some on the track as the United Rebel Sprint Series competes in three races on two different tracks in three days during the Labor Day weekend.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Rebels return to RPM Speedway in Hays for the final time this season. The track has hosted three other URSS events this year, with Mike Woodruff, Ty Williams and Kasey Beckham all grabbing wins. Beckham's victory, the first in his URSS career, came on the final night of the fourth annual Wheatshocker Rebel Nationals, which earned him a $2,000 payout.

“That track used to give me so much hell,” said Williams, who is coming off a URSS victory Saturday night at the Great American Dirt Track at Jetmore Motorplex. “At the end of last year, the last race there, we found something that worked with the car there. We've just been really good there ever since. I always look forward to going there. We used to drag up to Hays, and my dad would be like, ‘Why are you going to Hays? You suck there.’ But we found some things that make the car work there, and now it's one of my favorite tracks.”

On Saturday and Sunday, the Rebels head to the half-mile track at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton. All three nights are for Kansas-Colorado region points.

“A three-night weekend,” said Kinsley’s Darren Bowman. “You have to keep you stuff from getting tore up. Surviving three nights is half the battle sometimes. I think they're dual region races, so a lot of Colorado cars will be out then. It should be a good weekend. We just need to stay clean and make it through the weekend.”

Bowman has put together solid runs in Hays this year, including a sixth-place finish the final night of the Wheatshocker nationals and a fourth-place finish on the first night of the national event. He was fifth in a race earlier this year in Norton as well.

“At Hays, I've caught on,” Bowman said. “And actually at Norton, I've felt more comfortable this year than I ever have. That's why we're going back there.”

The weekend is expected to feature many of the heavy-hitters who have competed in the series. C.J. Johnson, the national champ two years ago who has won several races in Hays, and Jason Martin are expected to compete the first night of the weekend.

The three nights begin an eight-race stretch to close out the year for the Rebels. That means there are key national points on the line.

Dodge City’s Brian Herbert leads the national points standings with 3,506 in 27 races, while Wichita's Josh Fairbank is second with 3,308 in 24 races. Jetmore's Ray Seemann is third with 3,098 in 22 races, and Colorado's Judd Sheaffer is fourth with 2,856 points in 23 races.

Seemann leads the Kansas Region with 2,844 points in 22 races, with Herbert in second only two points behind him in 26 races. Fairbank is third with 2,822 points in 24 races.

Patrick Bourke leads the Colorado Region with 1,276 points in nine races, with Blake Smith Jr. is second with 1,250 points in 11 races. Adam Trimble is third, accumulating 1,214 points in nine races.
